Why Do We Wear Halloween Costumes?

Celebrated every October, Halloween is the perfect time to dress up and solicit candy from strangers.

But why do we wear Halloween costumes?

The original Halloween party, it’s thought that this ancient Celtic festival is where the holiday tradition first began.

Meant to mark the end of summer and the beginning of the dark season, the Celts believed that the barrier between the dead and the living became blurred.

They would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off any witches, ghosts, and ghouls over the winter period.

Costumes back then consisted of dead animal skins, furs, and heads. Luckily for you, we’ve upgraded since then!

    Feralia and Pomona

When the Romans conquered the Celts, the two cultures merged along with two Roman festivals - Feralia and Pomona.

Celebrated around the same time as Samhain, Feralia was a day to honor the dead. While the second festival celebrated the Roman goddess of fruit and trees, Pomona.

It’s believed this is why we bob for apples on Halloween.

    All Hallows’ Eve

Then came Christianity and All Martyrs Day, a Catholic feast to honor the dead, martyrs, and saints.

Also known as Allhallowtide or All Hallows’ Eve, the celebration would ultimately become simply (drum roll please) Halloween.

Similar to Samhain, people would light bonfires and dress up. Only this time, they wore angel, devil, and saint costumes during this church-sanctioned holiday.

They also hosted parades, ate cakes, and left out bowls of food to stop lost souls from entering their homes.

    An American Horror Story

Later, after the colonization of America, more customs and cultures combined. And the holiday we now know as Halloween emerged.

Over time, ghost stories, horror movies, costume parties, and dressing up to go trick-or-treating became the norm.

And today, I think we can all agree (whether you believe in ghosts or not) Halloween is one hell of a good time!
