When is Father's Day 2027?
In the United States, Father's Day always lands on the third Sunday in June, and in 2027 that's Sunday, June 20, 2027. So while the exact date shifts a little from one year to the next, it never wanders out of June, always falling somewhere between the 15th and the 21st. That makes it easy to keep track of: it's firmly a summer occasion, unlike Mother's Day, which sits back in spring on the second Sunday in May.

A Sunday is handy too, because most people have the day to themselves. It often turns into a slow breakfast, a backyard cookout, a fishing trip or simply a bit of extra time together. The whole idea is to give a dad who deserves it a little attention.
Why the date moves within June each year
The date hops around because it follows a weekday rather than a fixed number on the calendar. "The third Sunday in June" can land anywhere from the middle of the month to the back end of it, depending on which day June begins on. The rule itself never changes, though: count to the third Sunday in June and you've found the day.

Is Father's Day a public holiday?
Not quite. Father's Day has been marked by presidential proclamation since 1972, but it is not a paid federal holiday. Banks, post offices and shops generally stay open as usual, and there's no day off work attached to it. It's a celebration rather than a bank holiday, which is partly why landing it on a Sunday matters so much: it gives families the time together that the day is really about.
Father's Day around the world
The U.S. isn't alone in choosing the third Sunday in June. We share the date with the United Kingdom, Canada and many other countries, so if you've got family or friends there, there's a fair chance they'll be marking dad's day on exactly the same Sunday as you.
Plenty of countries do their own thing, though. Australia waits until the first Sunday in September, while Spain, Italy and Portugal tie Father's Day to Saint Joseph's Day on the 19th of March. Germany folds it into Ascension Day, which moves with Easter. So a relative overseas might be celebrating a season ahead of you, or well behind.
The history of Father's Day
Father's Day is a fairly young tradition. An early version was held in Grafton, West Virginia, in 1908, but the lasting push came from Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. Raised along with her five brothers by her father alone, a Civil War veteran, she wanted a day to honor him to sit alongside Mother's Day, and the first Spokane celebration was held in June 1910.
It took a surprisingly long time to become official. President Lyndon Johnson recognized the day with a proclamation in 1966, and in 1972 President Richard Nixon signed it into law as a permanent national observance on the third Sunday in June. These days it's a thoroughly established occasion, with cards, a phone call home and a small gift being the usual order of things.
Planning a thoughtful Father's Day
With the date sorted, all that's left is the gift. Most dads appreciate something soft and practical, the sort of thing they'll actually reach for. A Father's Day gift that he'll use again and again tends to land far better than something that ends up at the back of a drawer. A HappyHoodie is a safe bet here, our giant, super-soft oversized hoodie that's basically a wearable blanket, made for lazy Sundays and quiet evenings on the couch.
If you'd rather give something with a bit of cheek to it, a fun sweater with a goofy print is always a winner with a dad who likes a laugh. Whatever you settle on, the one thing worth doing is ordering in plenty of time, so it arrives well before the big Sunday rather than the morning after.
